Overview: Muriwai Golf Links is an 18-hole, par-72 course on Auckland's rugged west coast, close to the beach and the Tasman Sea. Harold Babbage's layout uses coastal dunes, free-draining ground, native vegetation, heather and pines, with wind providing a constant influence on club selection and trajectory. Golf New Zealand lists the longest current course distance at 5,322 metres, approximately 5,813 yards. The character changes between exposed shoreline holes and more sheltered corridors, but the land and weather remain the central features rather than a resort-style backdrop.
History: Muriwai Golf Club was first established in 1956 and opened for play in 1960. The original links were later redeveloped in 1999 and 2003, preserving the course's coastal identity while updating the playing surfaces and routing. That sequence explains why 1960 is the opening year for the current course record, while the later work is important to the layout seen today. The club has continued to present Muriwai as a straightforward links experience shaped by the exposed Auckland coastline.
Did You Know? The clubhouse sits at the highest point of the property and overlooks the 18th hole, giving the closing stretch a particularly strong sense of place. Muriwai also has an unusually vivid local setting: the round is played beside a famous surf beach, with the sound and movement of the Tasman coast close by. The course's mix of sandy ground, wind and rough coastal vegetation makes every change in weather part of the test.
