Overview: Mullion Golf Club is set on the cliffs of the Lizard Peninsula near Helston and is the most southerly golf course on mainland Britain. Gorse, heather and steep changes in level define the holes, and the stretch from the 6th to the 12th runs close to the cliff edges above sandy coves. At 6,053 yards from the white tees, the course plays to par 70, with Atlantic wind a constant presence.
History: The club was formed after a public meeting at the Assembly Rooms in Helston on 26 June 1895 and began as nine holes on borrowed land. After financial difficulties following the Second World War, the land and buildings passed to the National Trust. Members lobbied to keep golf going, and as the game recovered the Trust allowed the full eighteen holes to return. Mullion hosted the first Cornwall County Championship in 1901 and again in 2001.
Did You Know? From the 6th through the 12th, the routing runs close to the cliffs above Church Cove, with St Winwaloe’s medieval church at Gunwalloe in view below. This stretch pairs exposed coastal ground with a recognisable landmark on the Lizard.
