Overview: Mt Maunganui Golf Club is a tree-lined 18-hole course in the Bay of Plenty, only minutes from the surf beach and Tauranga’s central activity. The current card is par 72 at about 6,021 metres, with fairways moving through established trees and open playing corridors. The course is easy to walk and practical for a holiday round, but the coastal climate and changing lies still demand control around the greens.
History: The club’s history is closely tied to the growth of Mount Maunganui. C. Redhead, then New Zealand’s only acknowledged golf architect, prepared plans for the course at the invitation of Fraser Baddeley. A land sale in 1941 disrupted the original club, which later re-formed after a trust purchased a new property in 1947. The present club has continued to develop the site as the town became a major beach and cruise destination.
Did You Know? The layout is arranged in three six-hole blocks, each moving away from and back toward the clubhouse. That unusual loop structure means a golfer can play six, twelve or eighteen holes without finishing a conventional nine far from the facilities.
