Overview: The Lakes is Mount Edgecombe’s newer 18-hole course, built around rolling ground, indigenous bush and the broad Pani Dam north of Durban. Its yellow tees measure about 6,024 metres at par 72. The layout rises and dips through the estate, with water appearing as both a strategic hazard and a defining view. Compared with The Woods, The Lakes feels more open, modern and shaped by its reservoirs and wetlands.
History: The course was developed in 1994 and opened in 1997 as the second course at Mount Edgecombe. Daysen, de Villiers and van der Merwe designed the routing, while later work by Matkovich Design refined the course. The project transformed a former sugar-estate landscape into a two-course golf community while retaining indigenous areas and the water system.
Did You Know? The 8th asks players to decide whether to take on the corner of Pani Dam for a shorter approach or play safely with an iron. It is a compact illustration of The Lakes’ design idea: water is present as scenery, but the best holes make it a decision.
