Overview: Mount Compass Golf Course is an 18-hole links-style layout on South Australia's Fleurieu Peninsula, where gently undulating sandy ground provides the foundation for Neil Crafter's design. The official course information gives a par of 71 and more than 5,907 metres, approximately 6,454 yards, with 84 tight bunkers shaping the landing areas and approaches. It is a course of position and rhythm rather than a flat target-golf test: the ground changes the lie, and the surrounding vegetation makes a carefully chosen line more valuable than a hurried one. The sandy base also helps explain the firm, open style associated with the layout.
History: The project grew from a former sand-mining landscape and was developed by Brian and Neil Crafter. Brian died in 1994 before the full course was completed, so Neil finished the plans and construction of the front nine reached completion in 1997. Work on the back nine followed in 1998, and Jane Crafter officially opened the completed 18-hole course in 1999 under its original name, Fleurieu Golf Club. The course later became Mount Compass Golf Course, but the underlying design story remains a family collaboration shaped by the unusual sandy site. Later ownership and improvement work have refined the presentation without removing that origin.
Did You Know? Mount Compass began on land associated with sand mining, which helps explain the natural firmness and the links-style character. The transition from the first nine holes in 1997 to the completed 18-hole course in 1999 also gives the layout a clear two-stage construction history rather than a single opening moment.
