Overview: Morlais Castle Golf Club is an eighteen-hole moorland course at Pant in Merthyr Tydfil, on the foothills of the Brecon Beacons. The white-tee profile is 6,550 yards and par 71. Its routing is naturally divided into two contrasting halves: the first nine holes use ground around an old quarry, while the back nine move across rolling moorland with broad views towards the surrounding mountains. The remains of Morlais Castle run beside the third fairway, so history is part of the course's landscape rather than a distant name on the scorecard. Changes in elevation, exposed lies and the movement between quarry ground and open hillside give the round a varied rhythm. The course can be played as a traditional moorland test, but its appeal also comes from the way each hole responds to the shape of the land. The result is a course with clear local character and a setting that cannot be separated from its design.
History: Wales Golf records Morlais Castle as a James Braid design opened in 1900. The club's current history page says that 2025 marked the club's 125th anniversary, which agrees with that opening date. During its long life the venue has developed from an early Merthyr Tydfil golf club into the current eighteen-hole course and clubhouse, while retaining the two-part routing around the quarry and moorland. The castle remains are a permanent reference point on the course. In 2024 Morlais hosted the Wales Golf Welsh Club Team Championships, and the home team won the title before representing Wales at the European Team Championships in Bordeaux. That recent achievement adds a new chapter to a club whose identity is rooted in its setting and long local history.
Did You Know? Morlais Castle was built in 1270 by Gilbert de Clare, Earl of Gloucester and Lord of Glamorgan. Its remains run along the right side of the third fairway, making a medieval castle part of the playing landscape.
