Overview: Morgado Golf Course spreads across a large estate north of Portimão, where the front nine moves through flatter ground before the back nine climbs into a more undulating landscape. Russell Talley’s par-73 design uses broad fairways, large greens, bunkers, lakes, and doglegs to change the demands as the round develops. The scale is generous, but the best approach angles often depend on choosing the correct side of the fairway. It is open, strategic golf with a clear contrast between its two halves.
History: The course opened in 2003 as part of the Morgado resort development on a roughly 980-hectare estate. Course material credits Russell Talley and describes a championship project with par 73. The original concept preserved the estate’s broad character while using the natural elevation change to give the back nine more movement. That is why the course feels spacious without becoming flat or repetitive.
Did You Know? Morgado’s greens are notably large, with published information giving an average area of about 800 square metres. Large targets do not make approaches simple, because contours and surrounding bunkers can turn a safe-looking shot into a difficult recovery. The change from the flatter opening nine to the varied closing holes is the routing’s most useful visual clue.
