Overview: Broomfield is the shorter 18-hole links course at Montrose on the Angus coast. It measures 4,771 yards at par 67 and uses the coastal setting to create a compact, windswept round with firm running ground and views towards the sea. Harry Colt designed the course in the early twentieth century, and the routing shows how a links can ask for precision and imagination without needing championship length. The smaller greens and changing wind make a low score dependent on good distance control rather than simply hitting every club as hard as possible.
History: Montrose has played golf on this coastal site for centuries and describes itself as one of the oldest golf locations in the world. The Broomfield Course was designed by Harry Colt in 1907, adding a formal 18-hole layout to the historic links ground. Coastal erosion and the continuing movement of the shoreline are part of the club’s recorded story, so the course’s identity is tied to a living landscape rather than a fixed estate boundary.
Did You Know? Broomfield shares the Montrose links setting with the longer Medal Course, but it is a distinct routing with its own par and scale. The same coastal atmosphere therefore produces two different tests: the Medal asks for length, while Broomfield places more weight on accuracy, wind judgement and the ability to use firm ground around shorter holes.
