Overview: Montecastillo Barceló Golf Resort is an 18-hole, par-72 Jack Nicklaus design near Jerez de la Frontera, set beside the Jerez speed circuit and the resort’s historic castle. The layout is described by the Spanish federation as relatively gentle in its general movement, although several climbs add definition to the round. Its strongest visual finish is the 18th: the tee stands high above the fairway and the green is surrounded by a lake, making the closing approach a deliberate piece of theatre.
History: Montecastillo opened in 1992 and quickly became one of the defining courses in the Jerez area. The course hosted the Volvo Masters from 1997 through 2001, when the European Tour event moved here for five consecutive editions. It also hosted three editions of the Peugeot Tour. The resort setting developed around the course, with the castle clubhouse and hotel giving the property a character that is distinct from a standalone golf club.
Did You Know? The course’s official inauguration took place during the 1994 Turespaña Masters Open de Andalucía, where Jack Nicklaus competed alongside his sons Jackie and Gary. That makes Montecastillo’s opening story unusually personal: its designer was not only associated with the layout on paper, but was present at the event that formally introduced it to the wider golfing public. The property also sits on a large estate with native vegetation around the holes.
