Overview: Montclair’s Second Nine is one of the club’s nine-hole routings in West Orange, New Jersey. The layout begins and ends at the clubhouse, using mature parkland, sloping ground and Ross-style green approaches to make a compact loop feel complete. It is best understood as a specific nine within Montclair’s multi-nine facility, not as a standalone 18-hole course.
History: Donald Ross was commissioned in 1920 to design Montclair’s first, second and third nines, with the Ross work completed in the early 1920s. Charles Banks later designed the fourth nine, while later architects including Rees Jones contributed further changes across the facility.
Did You Know? Montclair’s four nine-hole layouts each start and finish at the clubhouse. That arrangement lets the club combine different loops into a longer round while preserving a distinct identity for the Second Nine and the other individual routings.
