Overview: The First Nine at Montclair Golf Club is one of four nine-hole loops at the private West Orange, New Jersey property. Donald Ross designed the first three nines, and the First Nine uses the club's rolling ground, tree-lined corridors and shaped greens to create a complete short routing. Each nine begins and ends near the clubhouse, allowing several 18-hole combinations.
History: Montclair commissioned Donald Ross in 1920 to design the First, Second and Third nines, with the Ross work ready for play by 1922. Charles Banks added the Fourth Nine in 1928, creating the 36-hole, four-loop structure that still defines the club.
Did You Know? Montclair is the thirteenth oldest golf club in the United States according to its own history. The First Nine should be read as a distinct routing, because the club's ranking reference describes a different combination of its four available nines.
