Overview: Montcalm Golf Club in Enfield is built across dramatic New Hampshire ground, with elevated views of mountains, valleys and lakes surrounding a routing of rolling fairways and bentgrass greens. Wogan & Sargent used subtle mounding and the property’s natural rise and fall to connect the holes without losing the feeling of a large rural landscape. The course has a calm visual rhythm, but the elevation changes and shifting approaches create a serious strategic test. Forest, open slopes and wildlife habitats share the same setting.
History: The club commissioned Wogan & Sargent in March 2001 to create the course. The architects were involved throughout the project and worked on the construction as the dramatic property was transformed into an 18-hole layout. Montcalm opened in 2003, after a multi-year design and construction process that shaped the course around the existing land rather than relying on a flat, manufactured platform. The club’s name and presentation reflect the original aim of making the golf experience quiet, rhythmic and closely connected to the site.
Did You Know? Montcalm uses four turf-grass varieties and an intermediate rough cut to emphasize the shaping of the fairways and the changing levels of the greens. The club also describes the property in terms of its deep woods and wildlife, so the visual identity is not limited to mountain views. Wogan & Sargent’s work is most apparent where the subtle mounding makes separate holes read as one continuous piece of ground.
