Overview: Montauk Downs State Park Golf Course is a public Robert Trent Jones redesign on the eastern end of Long Island. The current 18-hole course uses coastal exposure, changing wind, open ground, and water features to create a par-72 round of nearly 7,000 yards. Its setting is as important to the course’s identity as the Jones architecture.
History: The property began as a private course developed by Carl G. Fisher in 1927, with Captain H.C. Tippet credited as the original architect. After the site changed hands in 1966, Robert Trent Jones redesigned the course in 1968 and a new clubhouse was built, establishing the state-park course seen today.
Did You Know? Fisher hoped Montauk would become the Miami of the North, a development vision that included hotels, a yacht club, and golf. The course is one of the surviving pieces of that ambitious 1920s plan, now operating as a New York public park facility.
