Overview: Money Hill Golf & Country Club in Abita Springs uses a varied inland site rather than a flat, uniform piece of ground. Ron Garl’s 18-hole design moves through wooded land, rolling contours and water, with an artesian, spring-fed lake covering about 186 acres forming a major visual and strategic feature. The closing stretch brings the water into sharper focus, while the hills and valleys create changing lies and lines of play earlier in the round. That combination gives Money Hill a distinctive North Shore character: the course is shaped by the landscape, and the challenge comes from managing elevation, position and water as much as from the yardage.
History: Money Hill’s golfing chapter began in 1998, when Ron Garl designed the course as part of a larger property in the Abita Springs area. The land has a much older working history. The Goodyear family acquired the property in 1905, and it was used over time for timber, pulp and paper production, tung oil, camping and hunting. The later Money Hill community and golf course brought a new recreational purpose to that large tract while keeping the wooded, water-rich setting at the centre of the experience. Today the course remains closely tied to the broader property and its long evolution.
Did You Know? Money Hill’s name belongs to a property with a history that predates the course by many decades. Before golf, the land supported timber and tung-oil activity and later became known for camping and hunting, making the course one chapter in a much longer North Shore story.
