Overview: Mold Golf Club is an 18-hole upland parkland course at Pantymwyn in Flintshire, North Wales. Set in the shadow of the Clwydian Range, the course rises to about 850 feet above sea level and opens into wide views of the Welsh countryside, the Cheshire Plain, the Wirral and the surrounding hills. Its par-67 layout measures 5,594 yards from the white tees, but the modest scorecard does not make the course a soft option. The routing uses elevation, narrow approaches, contoured fairways, trees, stone features and sloping ground to reward accurate placement. Fred G. Hawtree's shaping gives the greens and their surrounds much of their interest, while the mineral-rich ground supports a rough landscape of orchids, cowslips, harebells and other wild flowers. Mold is a thoughtful, scenic test where touch and positioning matter more than simply hitting the longest drive.
History: Golf reached the Mold area in 1905 with the opening of Hafod Golf Links beside what is now the Plas Hafod Hotel. In 1909 the club moved to a more accessible site at Padeswood, close to the railway station. Severe rainfall and flooding in 1927 prompted another move to the present Pantymwyn site. The clubhouse history records that the former cricket pavilion was replaced by a purpose-built clubhouse in 1968, and that the course was extended to eighteen holes in 1977. The club has continued to improve the layout and its presentation while retaining the highland character and views that define the site.
Did You Know? Mold's official hole information shows six par threes and only two par fives, an unusual balance that helps explain why the course asks for precision and a reliable short game rather than relying on length alone. From the higher ground, the club says the 10th fairway provides a particularly broad panorama across North Wales and the neighboring English counties.
