Overview: Modderfontein Golf Club presents an established Johannesburg parkland course, with 18 holes and a par-72 card measuring 6,651 metres from the back tees. Tree lines, bunkers, dams, and streams create a course that asks for both accurate driving and disciplined approach play. The corridors can look generous from the tee, but the strategic pressure rises near the greens, where water and carefully placed hazards punish a casual second shot. It is a substantial inland course rather than a resort-style loop built around one dramatic feature.
History: The course was established in 1935 and is associated with Arthur Tomsett. Hugh Baiocchi renovated the layout in 1990, preserving the established parkland identity while modernising its playing demands. The course has since remained part of the Gauteng competitive scene, with the dams and streams providing a durable strategic framework rather than temporary decoration.
Did You Know? Modderfontein is described as having twelve dams and twelve streams. That network is unusually prominent in the course architecture, because water influences route choice on a large portion of the round without turning every hole into a forced carry. It also helps explain why the layout can feel more varied than its inland setting initially suggests.
