Overview: Midland Hills is a private St. Paul-area course with a rare concentration of classic architectural templates: Biarritz, Eden, Redan, Short, Alps, Punchbowl, Knoll and Cape. Seth Raynor’s routing uses rolling ground and elevation changes, while the current course blends restored green complexes with mature parkland and a modern tournament standard.
History: The club opened its doors on July 23, 1921, after members secured the Walsh farm and adjacent land. A lost Raynor plan was rediscovered in 2018, helping guide a restoration by Jim Urbina completed in 2020. The club has hosted more than a dozen Minnesota state tournaments since its first State Amateur in 1932.
Did You Know? The course’s architectural identity was reconstructed from evidence rather than assumed from reputation: the discovered 1921 map helped confirm Raynor’s intended holes, including a Biarritz tenth and a Redan. That gives the restoration an unusually tangible historical record.
