Overview: The private Mickelson National Golf Club traces an 18-hole route in the foothills west of Calgary, where the route uses rolling ground, water features and changes in elevation to create a strategic, distinctly modern test. Phil Mickelson’s first Canadian design is set against the Rocky Mountain landscape, but the experience is shaped as much by the movement of the land as by the views. The current tournament package lists six tee sets, from 4,727 to 7,437 yards, allowing the same design to be approached at very different scales. At its longest, the layout rewards a considered line and confident long-game decisions rather than distance alone.
History: The project was announced in 2014, construction followed over the next several years, and the course opened in June 2020. The club’s own timeline records preview play in 2018 and 2019, the opening of the 18-hole putting course called The Crater in 2021, and the clubhouse opening in 2023. A later club announcement set out the transition to fully private operation in 2025. The result is a young Canadian course with a clear identity from its first day: a large-scale Mickelson design that works with the foothills rather than disguising them.
Did You Know? Golf Canada highlighted an approximately 90-foot drop between the tee and green on the par-four 16th. The property also has The Crater, an 18-hole putting course, giving the club a second routing that echoes the main course’s emphasis on shaping shots across changing ground.
