Overview: Miacomet Golf Course is a public 6,912-yard, par 72 course on Nantucket, where open moorland, sandy ground and strong island light give the layout a links-style character. The course is broad enough to show the wind and natural contours, yet its fairways and green approaches still reward thoughtful positioning. Miacomet’s modern 18-hole arrangement offers a different experience from the island’s private coastal clubs: the setting is open and expressive, and the interest comes from how the routing uses the land rather than from manufactured spectacle.
History: Ralph Marble acquired roughly 400 acres in 1956, originally with a dairy operation in mind, and construction of the golf course began in 1960. Miacomet opened in 1963 as a year-round course. Howard Maurer later expanded the property to 18 holes in 2003, while the original nine underwent renovation and reopened in spring 2007. The name Miacomet is associated with a Wampanoag phrase commonly translated as “meeting place,” an apt description for a public course that became a central part of Nantucket golf.
Did You Know? Miacomet has been certified by Audubon International since 2017. That recognition reflects work around habitat, water and environmental management, all of which matter on an island course where the boundary between playing ground and surrounding landscape is especially visible. The property’s history therefore combines public golf with a deliberate effort to preserve the character of the Nantucket setting.
