Overview: Located in Ardmore, Pennsylvania, the West Course at Merion Golf Club is a highly historic 18-hole private layout originally designed by Hugh Wilson. Functioning as the companion to the massive East Course, the West Course is shorter but features incredibly tight, tree-lined fairways, deep geometric bunkering, and tiny, severely sloped putting surfaces. The course demands absolute precision and highly creative shot-making.
History: Opened in 1914, the West Course was designed by Wilson to provide a distinct, sporting contrast to the championship test of the East Course. The layout has been meticulously preserved over the decades, retaining its classic, Golden Age strategic values and serving as the primary daily-play venue for the highly restricted membership.
Did You Know? Unlike the East Course, which famously uses wicker baskets on its flagsticks, the West Course uses standard flags. However, the club maintains an aura of absolute tradition, with no yardage markers on the fairways, requiring players to visually judge all distances.
