Overview: Meridian Hills Country Club is an 18-hole private course in north Indianapolis, set among the mature residential landscape of the Meridian Hills community. William H. Diddel created the original course, whose character has been carried forward through later work by George Fazio, Pete and Alice Dye, and Bob Lohmann. The layout is a traditional parkland course with established trees, carefully maintained green corridors, and a routing that reflects the early twentieth-century growth of Indianapolis golf. Published course data places it near 6,700 yards and par 71.
History: Meridian Hills Country Club was established in 1923, as new residential communities and country clubs were forming north of the city. Diddel was one of the important Indianapolis architects of the period and designed the original 18-hole course. The clubhouse, completed in the following years, also became a gathering place for the surrounding town. Later architectural teams updated the course without erasing its historic identity, leaving the club with a layered design history rather than a single-period restoration.
Did You Know? The club has a civic role as well as a sporting one. Historical accounts describe the clubhouse as a meeting place for the Town of Meridian Hills, and local memories recall a skating pond near the seventh hole, showing how the grounds served the community through more than golf.
