Overview: McKenzie Meadows presents a public par-72 layout in Calgary’s south, set in the Bow River Valley beside Fish Creek Park. The club describes the layout as a links-style course designed by Gary Browning, with seven lakes, white sand bunkers and several tee choices. From the back tees it measures 6,605 yards at par 72. The route uses water and open ground to create a clear, playable strategy: golfers can choose how aggressively to challenge the hazards, but approaches still need to find the correct portions of the greens. Its park setting gives the course a broad, natural feel while keeping it close to the city.
History: The course was developed on land that had previously been a gravel pit and was held by Alberta Provincial Parks. The project’s backers acquired a long-term lease in the early 1990s and engaged Gary Browning for the concept drawings and detailed construction specifications. The finished public course opened in May 1996. That origin remains visible in the way the layout turns a heavily altered site into a coherent golf landscape, with lakes and shaped fairways providing structure while the surrounding Bow River valley and Fish Creek Park supply the wider setting.
Did You Know? McKenzie Meadows was built on former gravel-pit land. The seven lakes and white bunkers are therefore part of a larger reclamation story: the course converted a working extraction landscape into a public golf setting in the Bow River valley rather than starting with untouched parkland.
