Overview: Mayfair Country Club is an 18-hole public course in Sanford, set among mature oaks and the citrus-country landscape of central Florida. Current course records list par 72 and 6,403 yards from the back tees. Golf directories credit Donald J. Ross with the course, while the state history of the property preserves a more layered story of its original nine holes and later expansion.
History: The first nine holes opened in 1922 after the Chase brothers commissioned a construction crew led by Cameron Trent. Sanford purchased the course in 1924 and hired W. D. Clark to redesign and expand it to 18 holes. The property later hosted the Mayfair Inn Open on the PGA Tour from 1955 through 1958 and the 1959 Sanford Open on the LPGA Tour.
Did You Know? Mayfair's professional event history includes the 1959 Sanford Open, won by Marlene Bauer Hagge. The course also appears in accounts of a 1927 72-hole match involving Walter Hagen and Gene Sarazen, an early sign of Sanford's place in Florida golf history.
