Overview: Mauna Lani’s South Course is a resort layout on Hawaii Island’s Kohala Coast, built across the ancient Kaniku lava flow. Homer Flint, Raymond Cain and Robin Nelson used the volcanic ground, coastal views and natural vegetation to create a course with unusual texture and changing exposure. The holes move between open lava terrain and more planted sections, producing a varied resort round.
History: The South Course opened in 1981 and became the former home of the Senior Skins Game from 1990 through 2000. Its history is closely tied to the lava-flow landscape, which remains the defining physical foundation of the course rather than a feature added after construction.
Did You Know? The 15th hole is known for its oceanfront setting and has become one of the course’s most photographed holes. The hole’s position on the coast makes the wind and the lava edge part of the shot, not simply scenery behind the green.
