Overview: Mauna Kea Golf Course is a Kohala Coast course built across ancient lava fields above the Pacific. Robert Trent Jones Sr. created the original 18-hole routing, with ocean views, exposed volcanic ground and elevation changes shaping the design. The directory record lists 7,370 yards and par 72, while the resort’s current course has been updated through later work.
History: The original course opened on December 10, 1964, and later improvements were led by Rees Jones and the RTJ II team. The resort describes the present course as a transformation of the historic Palmer-era routing rather than an unrelated replacement.
Did You Know? Mauna Kea was one of the early Hawaii courses to make extensive golf use of a black-lava coast. Its engineering history is therefore part of the course story, because fairways and greens had to be created within a very hard volcanic surface.
