Overview: Masham Golf Club lies in parkland between the market town of Masham and the Swinton estate in lower Wensleydale. Its compact routing uses alternate tees for an eighteen-hole scorecard, with the white-tee round measuring 6,204 yards to par 70. The River Burn winds through the ground and comes into play on several holes, while elevated tees and sloping greens add interest to a quiet, pastoral setting. The stream also shapes the approach angles and rewards a careful landing area.
History: The club dates from 1895, made possible by the Cunliffe-Lister family, who had bought the Swinton estate in 1892, on land that had formed part of the park between Masham and Swinton Castle. The earliest mention appeared in the Leeds Mercury on Easter Monday 1895, reporting a match against eight members of Bedale Golf Club. The Swinton family has provided many of the club's presidents since.
Did You Know? The River Burn cuts through the course, and a par-three crossing over the water is one of the round’s clearest tests of distance control. A short shot can leave a delicate recovery near the stream.
