Overview: Maroon Creek Club sits at the base of Buttermilk Mountain outside Aspen, with Tom Fazio’s 18 holes moving from a former ranch setting into alpine meadows, a canyon wall and the banks of Maroon Creek. Elevation changes are constant, so distance control matters on nearly every shot. Wide fairways provide some relief from the tee, but the large, heavily contoured greens and the creeks and ponds that influence many holes demand a considered approach. The course is scenic because the routing is so closely fitted to the land.
History: Fazio’s course first opened for play in 1995 as part of the Maroon Creek Club. The design has since been refined, including a significant Fazio remodeling that adjusted the closing sequence and changed the par in the early 2010s. The course’s core identity remains intact: the opening holes cross a former working ranch, while the later holes climb and turn beside the creek, ravine and mountain slopes.
Did You Know? The seventh is a memorable elevated par 3 of roughly 196 yards, with a steeply sloped green protected by a creek on the left. It is one of the clearest examples of Maroon Creek’s design language, where the mountain setting is not just scenery but a factor in the angle, carry and recovery choice of the hole.
