Overview: The course stored in the directory as Cutters Ridge is now presented by Manistee National as The Revenge. It is the more wetlands-oriented half of the resort’s two-course offering, with a clay-based site, marshes and open wet ground giving the round a different texture from the sandy Retreat. Jerry Matthews’ routing reaches 6,654 yards from the black tees and offers five tee positions, allowing the golfer to choose how much of the elevated challenge to take on. Fairways that appear generous from one angle can become demanding when the next shot must negotiate water, marsh or changing ground.
History: Matthews laid out the course in 1999, with the opening following in the new millennium. The original directory name, Cutters’ Ridge, remained in circulation while Manistee National developed the current Revenge identity. That rename is important for searchers because both labels describe the same 18-hole routing at the Manistee resort. The current operator positions The Revenge beside The Retreat, a pairing that gives the property two contrasting northern Michigan landscapes rather than two versions of the same design.
Did You Know? The Revenge and The Retreat are separated by geology as much as by routing. The Revenge’s more clay-like base helps explain its marshes and wetlands, while the companion course is associated with sandier ground.
