Overview: Mammoth Dunes, the second course built at the premier Sand Valley Resort in central Wisconsin, is an extraordinary modern inland links course designed by David McLay Kidd. As the name suggests, everything here is built on a massive, mammoth scale, the fairways are up to 100 yards wide, the greens are sprawling, and the sand dunes are towering. It is designed to let players swing away with the driver without fear of losing balls, emphasizing strategic angles, distance control, and putting.
History: Opened in 2018, the course was designed by Kidd to offer a highly playable and enjoyable alternative to modern, penal course designs. Winding through a massive prehistoric lake bed composed entirely of deep sand, Kidd and his team shaped the fairways directly into the native sand, utilizing the massive sand blowouts to form the primary strategic hazards. The course immediately received universal critical acclaim, being hailed as the "definition of fun golf.".
Did You Know? The dramatic par-4 14th hole features a unique, driveable layout where a precise tee shot can catch a massive downslope, funneling the ball directly onto the green for a dramatic eagle opportunity. The course is walking-only and relies on a dedicated caddie program to guide players through the rumpled, sand-strewn landscape.
