Overview: Makani Golf Club, formerly known as Big Island Country Club, sits on the upper slopes above Kona with views toward five major Hawaiian mountains and the Pacific. Perry Dye’s par-72 course uses wide fairways, volcanic ground and water at the ninth and eighteenth to create a highland round with more wind and elevation than the coast below.
History: The course opened in 1996 and remains associated with Perry Dye. The operator describes a public course with visitor tee times, natural terrain and a routing that moves across the lower Hualālai slopes rather than through a fully landscaped resort valley.
Did You Know? The seventeenth hole has an island green, giving the course a very direct water target late in the round. The feature is set within the volcanic uplands, so its visual effect comes from contrast between green turf and dark lava ground.
