Overview: Machynys Peninsula is an 18-hole modern links-style course beside the Loughor Estuary in Llanelli, with views towards the Gower Peninsula. Nicklaus Design uses broad landing areas, multiple teeing grounds and water hazards to create a course that can be stretched for championship play without becoming one-dimensional. The estuary setting and reclaimed coastal landscape give the layout a different character from older dune links.
History: Machynys opened in 2005 as the first Nicklaus-designed course in Wales. Gary Nicklaus led the design work through Nicklaus Design, and the course was developed as part of the Machynys Peninsula resort beside the Millennium Coastal Park. Its early years included a rapid transition into championship golf, with the course hosting Royal and Ancient and Ladies European Tour events.
Did You Know? Machynys's official course information records 16 championships hosted since opening, including four R&A championships and four Ryder Cup Wales Ladies European Tour events. The club also describes Monk's Island as the youngest course to receive an R&A championship.
