Overview: Los Naranjos is a Robert Trent Jones Sr. parkland course in Marbella's Nueva Andalucía, laid across gently rolling ground with wide fairways, large greens, bunkers, and water hazards that make the apparent generosity deceptive. The first nine and second nine have noticeably different moods. Early holes use more pronounced changes in level and a mix of trees and water, while the later holes become flatter and bring the orange-growing heritage of the property into view. The course's design is built around broad championship corridors, but the preferred side of the fairway matters and the greens demand a controlled approach. At 18 holes and par 72, Los Naranjos balances room to play with the need to shape a score hole by hole.
History: Los Naranjos opened in 1977 as part of the development of the Nueva Andalucía golf valley. The club's history says Jones designed the course on roughly 70 hectares that included a river running through an orange plantation, which gave the club its name and supplied both the landform and the landscape identity. The property changed hands in the 1980s and 1990s, while the routing and clubhouse evolved. Los Naranjos remained open to outside play and became a regular venue for major professional and amateur events, including the Spanish Open.
Did You Know? The original first hole was not the same as today's first. The club history explains that the old opening hole is now the third, while the original eighteenth is today's second. That small routing change is a reminder that even a familiar modern scorecard can preserve layers from earlier versions of a course.
