Overview: The Links at Heartland Crossing is an 18-hole Nick Price and Steve Smyers design in Camby, southwest of Indianapolis. The public layout plays to par 72 and about 7,267 yards from the championship tees, with broad bentgrass fairways, prominent white-sand bunkers, native grasses and water becoming more influential on the back nine. Its links-style character comes from the open ground and wind exposure rather than from a coastal setting. The fairways invite a player to choose a line, but the best route changes with the position of the bunkers and the angle left for the next shot. The course remains spacious enough for a range of playing styles while offering enough strategic movement to reward repeat rounds. It is a deliberately open contrast to the heavily wooded parkland courses common around central Indiana.
History: Heartland Crossing was developed as the golf centrepiece of a residential community, with Nick Price and Steve Smyers creating a course that would use the low, open property rather than hide it behind dense planting. The design combines Price’s connection to high-level competitive golf with Smyers’s interest in natural strategy and ground movement. Over time, the layout has remained a public golf destination and has kept its original links-style identity. Current operations present it as a public course with daily play, seasonal passes and a wide range of tee configurations, while older material sometimes used semi-private language during the development period.
Did You Know? The championship tee set carries a 75.4 course rating and 134 slope. That demanding full-length version contrasts with the broad, open landing areas that make the course’s strategic choices visible from the first tee.
