Overview: Parkland completes the three-course Legends Golf Resort complex in Myrtle Beach. Parkland plays 18 holes at par 72, with tree-lined fairways, large multi-level greens, natural areas and deep-faced bunkers, built around a strategic parkland vocabulary rather than a conventional seaside links look. The back tees are listed at about 7,040 yards, but the routing offers several tee positions and a steady sequence of positional choices.
History: Parkland opened for play in October 1992 after Legends Golf Resort began development in 1990. Larry Young is credited as the architect of record, with the course modeled after the strategic traditions associated with Alister MacKenzie and George Thomas. Design work also involved other architects during development, but the finished course is identified with Young's vision and the resort's third-course expansion.
Did You Know? Parkland's design history is unusually layered. Larry Young took the architect-of-record role, while Tom Doak, Gil Hanse and Mike Strantz are all associated with work on parts of the project. That makes the course a useful case study in how a resort routing can evolve through several hands while retaining a clear strategic identity.
