Overview: The Legend at Giant's Ridge is an 18-hole public course in Biwabik, set among the rocky, wooded hills of northern Minnesota's Laurentian Divide. Jeffrey Brauer designed the course with PGA professional Lanny Wadkins, using elevation, forest, exposed stone, and distant lake views to make the landscape part of the strategy. The par-72 layout measures 6,912 yards from the back tees and creates variety through changes in height and visibility rather than a single repeated style of hole.
History: Giant's Ridge developed The Legend as its first championship golf course in the 1990s, opening in the summer of 1997. The project was part of a broader effort to bring warm-season recreation to a property already known for skiing and winter sports. The course earned immediate national attention as a new upscale public course, and its success helped establish the Iron Range as a destination for golf as well as outdoor recreation.
Did You Know? The Legend's 1997 grand opening included a celebrity skins game featuring Lanny Wadkins, Brett Hull, Robert Wrenn, and Craig Stadler. The event raised money for charity and announced the course with a distinctly Minnesota mix of professional golf, hockey, and local resort culture.
