Overview: The Sunset Course at Las Campanas is a visually stunning high-desert masterpiece designed by Jack Nicklaus. Opened in 2000, the course is a "kindler, gentler" departure from Nicklaus's earlier, more punishing designs, emphasizing wide fairways and a strategic routing that respects the delicate Santa Fe environment. The layout winds through native junipers, sagebrush, and dramatic ravines, offering 360-degree panoramic views of the Sangre de Cristo, Jemez, and Ortiz mountain ranges. With its firm, fast conditions and dramatic sunsets, it provides a serene and immersive golfing experience that captures the true essence of New Mexico's "Land of Enchantment.".
History: Shortly after its opening, the Sunset Course hosted a high-profile match between Jack Nicklaus and Ben Crenshaw for the "Shell's Wonderful World of Golf" series, showcasing the new design to a global television audience. It is part of the only luxury community in Santa Fe to offer two distinct Jack Nicklaus Signature courses, with the Sunset Course recognized for its slightly more open and forgiving character compared to its sibling, the Sunrise Course.
Did You Know? The Sunset Course features an unusual "out and back" routing that does not return to the clubhouse after nine holes, a design choice that enhances the feeling of isolation and connection with the natural desert landscape.
