Overview: The Norman Course at Lansdowne Resort is a resort 18-hole Greg Norman design in Leesburg, Virginia, following the Potomac River Valley through mature hardwood forest, open slopes and rocky outcrops. The par-72 course stretches to 7,332 yards and uses the existing landscape as its main architectural material. Island tees on the first hole, historic features near the third and fourth, and a demanding closing stretch give the routing a series of distinct chapters. The broad setting can look generous from the tee, but Norman’s lines into the greens reward players who plan around elevation, tree edges and the position of the next shot.
History: Lansdowne’s Norman Course opened in 2005 as part of a larger Potomac River resort and golf development. Norman used a least-disturbance approach, allowing the hardwoods, rock and rolling ground to remain central to the finished design. Golf Magazine recognized the course among the top new courses players could experience in its opening year, and the resort later developed the property into a 45-hole golf destination with the Robert Trent Jones Jr. Course and the Sharkbite nine-hole layout. The Norman Course remains the resort’s river-facing signature.
Did You Know? Greg Norman called the four-hole stretch from the 14th through the 17th “the hardest mile in golf.” The nickname reflects more than the length of those holes: the sequence combines changing wind, demanding approach angles and the pressure of finishing a resort course beside the Potomac landscape.
