Overview: Live Oak is one of four courses at The Hills Country Club in Lakeway, west of Austin. The official club profile describes an 18-hole, par-72 layout measuring 6,808 yards, with mature live oaks, meandering fairways, updated greens and subtle elevation changes. It is the calmest and most naturally walkable of the club’s four courses, using shade and gentle movement rather than dramatic exposure to create its identity. The corridors sit comfortably within the Hill Country setting, and the course’s scale makes it a useful contrast to the longer Signature and Flintrock Falls layouts at the same property.
History: Live Oak is rooted in the early history of Lakeway. The City of Lakeway records nine holes opening in 1965 and an 18-hole course with a permanent pro shop opening in 1967. The Hills’ own historical timeline lists the Live Oak course as opening in 1964, so the profile uses 1967 for the completed 18-hole routing and keeps the earlier development visible in the notes. More recently, the course has received fairway, tee-box and green-surround improvements, preserving its shaded character while updating the playing surfaces.
Did You Know? Live Oak takes its name from the more than 100 live oak trees that once defined the site. The tree cover is still central to the course’s atmosphere, and the combination of mature oaks, gentle slopes and a walkable layout gives the round a distinctly unhurried feel.
