Overview: Situated just south of San Francisco in Daly City, Lake Merced Golf Club features a mature parkland layout lined with Monterey cypress and eucalyptus trees. The course demands strategic shot-making, as players must navigate severe elevation changes, sloping fairways, and heavily bunkered green complexes. Gil Hanse completed a comprehensive restoration in 2022, restoring the bold aesthetic and challenging character of the original design.
History: Willie Locke designed the original course in 1922, and Alister MacKenzie revised the layout in 1929. The building of the interstate highway in the 1960s forced a relocation of several holes under Robert Muir Graves. The 2022 Hanse restoration successfully reopened historic sightlines and rebuilt MacKenzie's signature style bunkers.
Did You Know? The club has hosted several major tournaments, including the U.S. Girls' Junior Championship in 2012, won by future major champion Minjee Lee. The course has also regularly hosted LPGA Tour events, testing the world's best players with its challenging coastal winds and demanding tree-lined fairways.
