Overview: Kungl. Drottningholms Golfklubb occupies a remarkable setting on Lovön, where mature woodland, open pasture and the royal estate landscape surround the 18 holes. Rafael Sundblom and Nils Sköld’s design is a traditional parkland course with tree-lined corridors, natural streams and greens that reward accurate approach play. The layout is not simply a test of distance. It asks players to choose sensible lines through the trees, manage uneven lies and leave the ball in the correct part of each putting surface. The historic setting adds atmosphere, but the golf remains the centre of the experience.
History: King Gustaf VI Adolf officially inaugurated the course in 1959. The club’s history identifies Sundblom and Sköld as the original designers and records a later restoration and modernisation programme, including work by Johan Benestam in 2011. That balance between historic design and careful updating has allowed the course to retain its original character while remaining a serious Stockholm-area test.
Did You Know? The golf course lies close to Drottningholm Palace, the private residence of the Swedish royal family. The surrounding cultural landscape is therefore not a backdrop added for golf, but part of the place’s long-established identity.
