Overview: Kooyonga Golf Club is laid across undulating sand hills near Adelaide, a setting that gives the course both firm foundations and a surprisingly varied sequence of lies. The par-72 layout is traditional in style, with sandy ground, native rough, couch fairways and bentgrass greens supporting strategic golf rather than spectacle. Its proximity to Adelaide Airport does not define the experience once the round begins; the land reads as a continuous, carefully shaped sandbelt landscape.
History: Club founder H.L. Cargie Rymill found the May's Paddock site in 1922 after a train strike interrupted his journey, and the golf club officially opened on 9 May 1923. The first clubhouse followed in 1924 on the site of an old farmhouse. Much of Rymill's routing has survived, while later course work by Crafter + Mogford and the 2026 Mackenzie & Ebert project refine the playing surfaces and details without erasing the original identity.
Did You Know? Kooyonga's name is traditionally explained as an Aboriginal expression meaning plenty of sand, plenty of water. Whether treated as a precise translation or a piece of club lore, it captures the physical setting well. Rymill's original course grew from sandy, formerly swampy ground, and that unusual combination still shapes the way the fairways and greens play.
