Overview: Knickerbocker is a classic Northern New Jersey country-club course in Tenafly, shaped around Donald Ross’s use of angled greens, short strategic holes and larger approach complexes. The layout combines demanding green contours with enough variety for members of different abilities, while its proximity to New York City gives the course a secluded, wooded setting that feels removed from the metropolitan area.
History: The club was established in 1914, with Donald Ross and Herbert Strong associated with the original design. Ron Forse re-envisioned the course in 2007–08, working with the existing character rather than replacing it. Knickerbocker hosted the first New Jersey State Open in 1921 and later returned as host of the centennial State Open.
Did You Know? The club describes its course as a blend of original Ross work and careful later updates. That continuity is why the course can show classic features such as compact green sites and short strategic holes while still functioning as a modern championship venue.
