Overview: Kiva Dunes occupies a rare Gulf Coast setting in Gulf Shores, with approximately 3,000 feet of beachfront and another 2,800 feet along Mobile Bay. Jerry Pate’s 7,092-yard, par-72 design moves through sand dunes, coastal vegetation, lakes and wildlife areas rather than a conventional inland parkland landscape. The rolling ground gives the fairways shape, while wind and the sandy soil influence both the visual character and the way shots react. Kiva Dunes is a course in which the coast is an active part of the architecture, not merely a backdrop beyond the property.
History: Kiva Dunes Golf Course opened to the public in 1995 as a Jerry Pate design. The same year, Golf Digest ranked it No. 2 among the best resort courses in the United States, giving the new Gulf Coast project immediate national attention. The property later grew into a larger resort community with the Kiva Lodge, residences and beach amenities, but the golf course remains the centre of the original development. A later enhancement project directed by Pate and Heritage Links reshaped greens and bunkers while continuing the coastal design language.
Did You Know? Kiva Dunes is the only golf course in Alabama directly described by its official history as a coastal layout with beachfront on both the Gulf of Mexico and Mobile Bay. That geography explains the course’s unusual mix of dunes, wetlands and inland water.
