Overview: The River Course at Kingsmill is a resort course in Williamsburg that follows the James River and the wooded, tidal landscape around Kingsmill. Pete Dye’s routing uses water, river views, shaped bunkers and demanding approach angles, while multiple tee sets keep the 6,831-yard par-71 course playable outside tournament conditions.
History: The course opened in 1975 as a Pete Dye design and was renovated under Dye’s direction in 2004, with additional Ault, Clark & Associates work associated with the course. It hosted the Michelob and Kingsmill professional events for decades, including the LPGA’s Kingsmill Championship.
Did You Know? The River Course hosted the Kingsmill Championship and earlier Michelob events for decades, making its James River setting part of a long professional tournament history. The competition exposed Dye’s water-side strategy to fields playing for much higher stakes than a normal resort round.
