Overview: King David Mowbray is a Cape Town parkland course with a strong historic identity and a layout that rewards accuracy more than empty power. Tree-lined fairways, tight doglegs and a compact urban setting create a stern test, while the course remains close to the city and the airport. The current club brings together the King David and Mowbray traditions under one name and continues to present a par-72 championship layout.
History: The King David course began on the former Fens dairy farm, bought in 1954 for a Jewish country club and wider sporting centre. Bob Grimsdell was commissioned to assess the property and described its potential as a first-class national course. Mowbray’s separate history reaches back to 1910, and the modern club preserves both strands after their merger.
Did You Know? Mowbray’s earlier course occupied Rondebosch Common, where golf shared the ground with rugby, public paths, a cemetery and even grazing cows. That unusual setting helps explain why the club’s move to its current parkland site was such an important part of its identity.
