Overview: Kilimanjaro Golf & Wildlife Estate is Tanzania's first 18-hole championship course, set in an African-bush landscape near Arusha between Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru. David Jones routed the course through indigenous plants, native grasses, lakes and streams, with USGA-specification greens and four tee sets that make the layout playable from about 5,400 to 6,500 metres. The closing par three is a memorable risk-and-reward hole, played to an island green in front of the clubhouse.
History: The project was developed on a largely untouched site from 2008, when designer David Jones documented the early Kiligolf work. The completed course opened in 2015 and was built with a conservation-minded approach that retained an African character while using lakes and streams fed by the nearby Usa River. It has since hosted the Tanzania Open and local and international events.
Did You Know? The official course description gives the 18th an island green, while the designer describes it as a par-three finale directly in front of the clubhouse. From the practice area, golfers can also look toward Mount Kilimanjaro; the course's published championship length is approximately 6,500 metres, converted here to 7,113 yards.
