Overview: Salem's Kernwood Country Club is home to a private 18-hole Donald Ross course, set on wooded and gently varied North Shore ground. The current blue tees measure 6,456 yards at par 70. Ross's emphasis on shaping, angles, and green contours is expressed within a compact New England parkland setting.
History: Kernwood's first nine was completed by the end of August 1915, and the second nine followed by August 1918. The club's official history therefore separates the early nine-hole construction from the completion of the full 18-hole course.
Did You Know? The course reached its full 18-hole form in 1918, only a few years after the first nine was completed. That phased construction is a useful reminder that many historic American courses grew in stages rather than appearing as finished layouts.
