Overview: Kempton Park offers 18 parkland holes in the Spartan area in Spartan, measuring 6,584 metres from the men’s tees and playing to par 72. Kikuyu fairways and Poa or Bent grass greens sit within a practical inland layout where tree placement, fairway width, and the position of the approach determine how much of the scorecard is available. It is a course that can welcome developing golfers while still asking better players to control trajectory and distance.
History: Bob Grimsdell and Bill Kerr designed the course in 1965, and the layout was redesigned in 1981. The club’s history also records Ernie Els learning the game at Kempton Park, a useful reminder of the course’s role in local player development. The current routing should be understood as a mature parkland course shaped by those successive stages rather than as a newly built facility.
Did You Know? Ernie Els is one of the best-known golfers associated with Kempton Park. His connection is a player-development story rather than a claim that he designed the course. The club’s accessible parkland layout provided a place for a future major champion to build the habits of course management and ball striking that later defined his career.
