Overview: Katberg Eco Estate places an 18-hole country-style course high in the Winterberg Mountains of the Eastern Cape. The setting is the first thing a golfer notices: broad mountain views, open grassland and a sense of space that changes as the holes move across the estate. The course measures about 6,300 metres and plays to par 72. Kikuyu fairways, Bentgrass greens and carefully placed bunkers give the round a clear playing line, while the natural contours keep the approaches varied.
History: The course opened in 2008 as part of the Katberg golf-estate and hotel development. Golf Data was involved in shaping the layout, which follows the natural lie of the mountain property rather than forcing a flat, repetitive routing onto it. Katberg’s appeal has always been tied to the combination of golf and a remote mountain retreat: the estate provides accommodation and outdoor activities alongside the course, making it a destination rather than a quick urban round.
Did You Know? The course has four par threes and four par fives, and the finish has a memorable piece of scenery: a waterfall lies between the 17th and 18th holes. That final stretch asks players to keep their attention on the golf while the Winterberg landscape supplies one of the course’s strongest visual signatures.
