Overview: Judgeford Golf Club is a country-style 18-hole course between Porirua and the Hutt Valley, about 25 minutes from Wellington’s CBD. The club describes a landscape shaped by a distinctive local microclimate, while its history records a current course of approximately 5,582 metres. The layout moves through a rural setting crossed by the road and framed by creek, farmland and former military-ground features, giving the round a more exploratory character than a conventional suburban course.
History: Alfred Flighty developed a public links and clubhouse on his property in 1932, charging two shillings per round and building a weekend golf destination for Wellington people. After the war, volunteers cleared debris and military remnants as a nine-hole course took shape. A full eighteen followed quickly, and the club’s present routing still reflects the early arrangement of twelve holes on one side of State Highway 58 and six on the other.
Did You Know? Some remnants of the wartime military camp remain part of the course landscape. The club’s history says concrete foundations were reused as buttresses along the creek, meaning a piece of the property’s twentieth-century military story is still incorporated into the physical setting of the golf holes.
